Auditions are held at YLT. If you are planning to audition for a musical, please be ready to sing 16 bars of a Broadway song with a karaoke CD. (A karaoke CD is the preferred method for YLT auditions. Sheet music is fine too, but please call ahead so we can have a pianist ready.) Both musicals and plays will have cold readings; musicals may also have cold dance auditions.
Tips for a Fabulous Audition:
1) Be familiar with the show for which you are auditioning! This will impress the director, and you can prepare any accents needed for a cold reading.
2) Be prepared for your audition! Having a song ready and singing with a karaoke CD is very impressive and shows the director how dedicated and responsible you are.
3) Be polite! Auditions take time, and you might be sitting for an hour doing nothing. While the director is watching those auditioning on stage, an assistant is probably watching the behavior of those in the audience. Personal behavior plays a big role when casting parts.
4) Be flexible! More call backs might be needed before all roles are cast. Not being available for a call back may prevent you from getting your favorite part. Also, the director may want you for a completely different role than what you wanted, so you must be willing to accept a part other than your favorite.
Tips for Song Choices:
1) One can never go wrong with a Broadway song! Popular songs of today do not really show the range of a singer; Broadway songs are best.
2) Sing a song from the show your are auditioning for! Most people say this is a no-no, but we at YLT think it is a great way to show the director how well you might sing a part.
3) If you want to be the villain, sing a villain type song, like "Alive" from Jekyll and Hyde. Similarly, if you want be the princess, sing a princess-type song like "Part of Your World" from Little Mermaid.
